The 2025 lineup of the Apple iPhone 17 series is likely to look very different from the current iPhone 16 series. Apple is poised to replace the iPhone 16 Plus with a new iPhone 17 Air, speculated to be the thinnest iPhone ever. This device is also expected to represent the future of iPhones, according to a Bloomberg report published on Sunday.
The report highlights that Apple initially wanted the iPhone 17 Air to be the first portless iPhone. However, regulatory constraints, especially from the EU, have led Apple to include a USB-C port. Otherwise, the iPhone 17 Air would have relied entirely on wireless charging and wireless data transfer, representing Apple’s future direction for iPhones.
The iPhone 17 Air is said to be significantly slimmer than not just iPhones but any smartphone—possibly except for the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge.
It is also expected to retain all the ports and buttons of the iPhone 16, including a Camera Capture button, an Action Button, physical volume buttons, and a side button. This clearly indicates that while future iPhones may eventually go portless, they will still feature physical buttons. The era of a button-less iPhone remains far off.

Compared to the iPhone 16 series, the iPhone 17 series is expected to have a significantly different design. However, it will still consist of four models: the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro will remain, while Apple will replace the iPhone 17 Plus with the iPhone 17 Air and the iPhone 17 Pro Max with the iPhone 17 Ultra, according to a report from Naver Blog.
This means the iPhone 17 Ultra is expected to deliver a significantly different user experience and will serve as Apple’s ultimate flagship, offering the best technology available.
Apple is also reportedly working on revamping iOS and macOS with the upcoming iterations, once again aiming to enhance the user experience.
