Apple may be working on a smart doorbell with Face ID and iCloud support | Technology News

Apple is known for making great smartphones, tablets and wearables, but a new rumour hints that the Cupertino-based tech giant is now planning to launch a smart doorbell.

The news comes from the known Apple analyst Mark Gurman, who in his latest edition of the Power On newsletter said that the new smart doorbell camera will come with Face ID. The report also suggests that the lock would work just like you would unlock your iPhone, meaning it will automatically unlock the door when a resident looks at it.

If true, this will mean that the upcoming doorbell will make use of the company’s Secure Enclave chip, which is responsible for storing and processing Face ID information. Gurman says that the device will “likely” work with existing HomeKit-compatible smart locks and that the camera “will make use of Apple’s in-house “Proxima” combination Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip”, which might also find its way on the much anticipated HomePod and the upcoming Apple TV devices.

For those wondering, Apple’s new wireless networking chip – Proxima is said to process Face ID-related images on the device itself and could also back up the data to iCloud, giving the tech giant a new way to boost its cloud-based subscription service. While Gurman noted that the new smart doorbell is still in the early stages of development, Apple is expected to launch the product sometime in late 2025.

Rumour also has it that Apple’s new smart doorbell with Face ID will be accompanied by a new 6-inch touchscreen smart home hub device, which might come with a new operating system and support Apple Intelligence and FaceTime.
